First day of ATW and I'm beat. Levinas, you continue to inspire me. And tofu. And miso soup. And that chicken dish I had for lunch in the Kyushu University cafeteria.

Will write after I digest everything.

Am in Mactan Domestic Airport, about to board ze plane. Karen just gave one of the best send-offs in Nikay history. First, Karen and Monik. And then Julian came. And then we had drinks in the pricey cafe. Imagine, an 12-peso 18.50-peso banana. Hugs and kisses. Epic, since i'm not, like, a huggy person.

I'll be in Manila for a few days. Leaving for Fukuoka on Sunday.

"Your heart is like a great river after a long spell of rain, full to the banks. All signposts that once stood on the ground are gone, inundated and carried away by that rush of water. And still the rain beats down on the surface of the river. Every time you see a flood like that on the news you tell yourself: That's it. That's my heart."

Urduja was an immense disappointment. Photo not shown below.

You think you own whatever land, Yolando? Methinks it's back to the drawing board (ay, literal!) for Team PH-Mainstream.

NOT

Mama, snot-heavy after an MRT ride, is back from Manila. Lunch at Wakamatsu Yakiniku and not the usual Little Nonki (oh reliable satisfier of profound Japanese food cravings, forgive us).

And I stole her copy of Beckett's Dream of Fair to middling Women. Hee.

A text message from Gorm: "...unsa kaha'g, pakan-on ka'g one spoon of pawikan pero mukanta ka sa Broadway as Elphie." (Would you eat turtle meat in exchange for playing Elphaba on Broadway?)

I just finished watching a local documentary about the Ahas-Pagong. They're soft-shelled turtles with really long necks, and they like to freeload on farmer's crops. Hence, pulutan. Article here.

We used to keep one in our garden. Gorm and Papa brought it home following a river trek in Barangay Bonbon (name's fo realz). Don't know how he/she died:

Lovely thing. Never shall I down you with my RHB. Witch's honor.

New layout for Father's day. Happy Father's day, Meinrado. He got a blue cupcake after dinner.

So it's all set. I'm leaving for Japan at the end of the month to study in the Asia in Today's World (ATW) Program in Kyushu University, Fukuoka. It's a 6-week thing and I get to stay in a dormitory for the first month and home stay for the last two weeks. Thus while waiting I'll be cramming Nihongo, bothering Cebu friends and, er, shopping.

I look forward to the day when young women can brave the streets without being harassed by security guards, tambays, visa fixers, and other douchebags.

In other news, happy birthday to my Mama Jane!
